Topsoil organic matter build‐up in glacier forelands around the world

چکیده
Since the last glacial maximum, soil formation related to ice-cover shrinkage has been one major sink of carbon accumulating as organic matter (SOM), a phenomenon accelerated by ongoing global warming. In recently deglacierized forelands, processes SOM accumulation, including those that control and nitrogen sequestration rates biogeochemical stability newly sequestered carbon, remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate build-up during initial stages (up 410 years) topsoil development in 10 glacier forelands distributed on four continents. We test whether net accumulation (i) depends time since deglacierization local climatic conditions (temperature precipitation); (ii) is accompanied decrease its (iii) mostly due an increasing contribution from plant origin. measured total concentration (carbon, nitrogen), relative hydrogen/oxygen enrichment, stable isotopic (13C, 15N) functional groups (C-H, C=O, C=C) compositions, distribution pools different thermal stability. show content increases with faster experiencing warmer climates. The shows consistent trends across studied chronosequences. During first decades development, low amount dominated thermally pool small highly thermolabile pool. decreases age at all sites, indicating storage labile centuries suggesting inputs (SOM depleted nitrogen, enriched hydrogen aromatic carbon). Our findings highlight potential vulnerability stocks proglacial areas decomposition suggest their durability largely plants.

Intraguild predation in pioneer predator communities of alpine glacier forelands
Pioneer communities establishing themselves in the barren terrain in front of glacier forelands consist principally of predator species such as carabid beetles and lycosid spiders. The fact that so many different predators can co-inhabit an area with no apparent primary production was initially explained by allochthonous material deposited in these forelands. However, whether these populations ...

what miller wants is a theatre of heightened consciousness. he speaks of two passions in a man, the passion to "feel" and the passion "know". he belives that we can have more of the latter. he says: drama is akin to the other inventions of man in that it ought to help us know more and not merely to spend our feelings. the writing of the crucible shows us that he is trying to give more heightene...

Total organic carbon has a major influence on both the chemical and biological processesthat take place in sediments. Algal bloom is one of the organic carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems. In 2009 algal bloom occurred in the Hormozgan province and prolonged for months, which finally setteled down in 2010. In this study the variations of total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (TOM) and tot...
متن کاملOrganic Carbon Accumulation in Topsoil Following Afforestation with Willow: Emphasis on Leaf Litter Decomposition and Soil Organic Matter Quality
Short-rotation intensive cultures (SRICs) of willows can potentially sequester carbon (C) in soil. However, there is limited information regarding the factors governing soil organic C (Corg) accumulation following afforestation. The objectives of this study were to: (i) determine whether willow leads to Corg accumulation in the topsoil (0–10 cm) two to six years after establishment in five SRIC...
متن کامل'Sax-sess'-- genetics of primary succession in a pioneer species on two parallel glacier forelands.
The primary succession on glacier forelands is characterized by a sequence of early and late successional species, but whether there is also a chronosequence at the intraspecific, genetic level is a matter of debate. Two opposing hypotheses differ in their prediction of genetic diversity in colonizing populations due to founder effects and postcolonization gene immigration. The development of g...
